I'm Sailing!

What About Bob, anyone?  Anyway...

We've been hosting an international student from Ecuador, Lilibeth, for going on a year now.  She has quickly become a friend and part of our family.  Recently, she and her boyfriend invited us to go sailing in the SF Bay!  Thanks, you guys!

My Grandpa & Grandma Mac dropped in from Montana over the weekend to see their great-grandkids.  This is the grandpa that they get their 1/8 Filipino from. :)

On Guard!

A Homeschool Update

After several weeks of our pre-homeschool co-op, Kim and I started to notice the enthusiasm draining (in both, us and our kids) and an increase in stress levels.  We realized that, as new homeschool teachers we've fallen into the assumption that we had to make this look like conventional preschool, robbing ourselves and the boys of the freedom, flexibility and creativity that homescooling offers.  After a few-month hiatus, we agreed to trade in our rigid structure and focus on our very different boys' very different interests on our own with plans to get together for occasion projects and crafts.

We don't have a scheduled time that we focus on school right now.  We just take the opportunities as they present themselves, whether we're preparing meals, playing with Ronin, running errands or sitting at a restaurant waiting for our food.  Here are some of the things we've been incorporating in school lately:

READING & SPELLING
Since Reid's still very enthusiastic about reading and spelling, we've been focusing on those subjects on our own.  We no longer wait for quiet, calm moments in the home.  Very informal, slightly structured lessons usually take place at the kitchen counter with our trusty dry-erase board in the midst of preparing meals, brewing the morning's coffee and, well, life.

Although he thinks he's just playing the "build-a-word" game, Reid is going through a book Colby's mom passed down to us called, "Alpha-Phonics - A Primer for Beginning Reader" which uses the same style I was already using to teach Reid to read.  He's learned blended letter sounds (such as, ck, sh, ch, th, tr, gl,
ss & qu), and can now read words like "truck," "thick," "quick," "chick," "shock" and "glass".  Colby and I also like throwing in words like, "chump" and "thug," but then Reid always asks what it means after sounding it out, so we just answer with one of
Colby's friends' names (usually "Uncle" Craig).

With his reading skills developing so quickly, he's been reading some of the beginner books from the level 1 Animal Antics book set.  They're awesome and so encouraging for Reid because they have a lot of word repetition.  I recommend these to all of Reid's young friends who are on the road to learning to read.

He's also learned to reverse his new skills and tell you how simple three- and four-letter words are spelled.

ART
We haven't done any cool crafts in a while, but since we play so much with the white board, my little Picasso's been doodling some really sweet stuff that just melts my heart.  In the first doodle below, he drew the guy on the left and I gave him an arm and hand, made the oval into a balloon and gave him a pal.  I can't wait to see his first drawing of our family!

MATH
Reid and I printed and cut out our own flash cards and take turns going through them with each other. =)  He's learned to count to 29, but usually skips 16.

WRITING
Reid's really into mazes now and always asks Colby and me to draw them for him.  They've become a great exercise to help him learn to control his hand to write and draw.  However, it usually takes me about five minutes to draw one up and him about five seconds to solve it and ask for another one!

Mister Smarty Pants can now trace his name well and is very close to writing it free-hand, although the letters are out of order and his "d" usually comes out like a "p".

STATES
We've taken a break from playing with Reid's wooden states puzzle, however he still remembers where a handful of states are.

SPANISH
Lilibeth, our housemate and friend whom we're hosting from Ecuador speaks Spanish to Reid here and there.  He's picked up a lot of nouns (mostly food, like me!), colors, numbers and a few phrases.

SCIENCE
He's really interested in learning about planets and dinosaurs, so maybe I'll teach him the names of them for now.

CHARACTER
This subject trumps all others.  We want our boys to grow into God-loving, others-centered, respectful, capable men, full of integrity.  I'm on the lookout for ways in addition to teaching by example to include this in our homeschooling.  I love this Character Qualities chart I found on the Duggars' family website.  Have any other ideas, suggestions or tools?  Send them my way, please!

It probably sounds like we're doing a ton, but we're actually only "doing school" for about 30 minutes a few mornings a week.  Other than that I try to incorporate learning in everyday life.  I'm constantly reminding myself to keep it light and fun as we navigate our way to a style that works for us for now.

Out with the Gold & in with the New

As a new Gold Buyer for Aurum Strategies, I was so excited to be invited to Keller Williams Realty of Antioch's Saint Patty's Day Pot o' Gold-themed office party fund-raiser!  I had a blast writing a total of $2,272 in checks to the employees for their unwanted gold and raised $114 for their company's charitable organization, KW Cares (thanks, ladies!!).

What is Aurum Strategies?
Aurum Strategies is based in Houston, TX with over 150 reps across the USA.  As “The Original Gold Party” people, they offer top dollar for your gold.  So be the first of your friends to host the only party where you & your friends make money instead of spend it!

How Does it Work?
At Aurum Strategies, there is no formal presentation, no pressure, and no selling. We are buying broken and unwanted gold and silver jewelry. So basically, guests drop in for a "Fun Ladies' Night Out / Happy Hour" and leave with more money than they came with. An average party of 10-15 people yields $2,500-$3,000 to your guests and $250-$300 to you as the hostess.
Where else can you have a party where the attendees get a check, the hostess gets a check and everyone leaves happy?

During the party I walk you and your guests through all of the tests that I perform to determine the payout for your gold and I do this right before your eyes.  So don’t send your gold in and get less for your unwanted jewelry than you deserve.

EMAIL ME if you're interested in hosting a party with me!

Hosts earn 5% of the total checks written at the party or 10% for your favorite charity, (not from your guests’ checks but from Aurum).

From Lemons to Wieners

As I mentioned in my last LeMons post, the Cannonball Bandits indubitably upped the ante with their latest car theme, "The Nascar Mayer Wiener Mobile," which they raced at the "Sears Pointless" at Infineon in Sonoma -a real, grown up's race track!

The boys raced steadily, with only a couple black flags, no major injuries (besides Joel's finger), and the wiener intact the entire race, which was their main goal!

DAY 1 (Assembly & Inspection):

The team got more than their share of attention for their borderline obscene structure, which they spent several hours welding to the car upon arrival.  One of the best parts of the weekend for me was watching the reactions of passersby as the team erected the fruit of their last few months' labor.

After assembly, they went through inspection within which the judges performed a "stability test" consisting of patting the wiener and asking if this thing will stay on.  They were told by the inspectors that if a piece fell off on the track they would be penalized an hour off the track.  Then they were told by the judges in a later part of the inspection that if they took any pieces off before the race, they would be docked 500 laps.  In other words, don't take it off and it better not fall off on the track.

If it wasn't clear then that the judges were well pleased with our wiener, it was when Judge Phil (a.k.a. Murilee Martin) posted the following on the LeMons forum that night:
"The theme ante has been upped with a Corolla FX16 converted to a fairly credible Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Sure, it looks like a Wienermobile built by drunks in a junkyard, working with only a confused verbal description of the original Wienermobile, but we love it anyway."
We also got quite a big mention from Murilee on his Jalopnik site that night!

DAY 2 (Race Day 1):

Good, clean racing by the Bandits.  No black flags.  Crowd loves us.  They even cheered when the moment finally came for Colby to take that thing to the track.  Did have to pit after first lap and again after the second lap, plus a couple more times after that for some fine-tuning welds & fender hammering, but then they were off.

Pit stops consisted of, not checking the oil, brakes, tire pressure, fluid levels, etc., but of merely gassing and lots more welding.

Unfortunately, there was one major incident on the track on day one when a Cavalier hit the wall, flipped and caught fire.  The driver got out of the car quickly, but was rushed to the hospital with a broken neck, sweeping in an undercurrent of solemnness for the remainder of the weekend.

That one gives me chills every time I watch it and really gave us all a sober perspective in the midst of the weekend's lemon freakshow.

DAY 3 (Race Day 2 & Awards Ceremony):

We arrived with over 300 hotdogs, but after the first two days, we could hardly bear to look at another one, so we BBQ'd the rest and handed them out to hungry spectators, fellow teams, and judges, which was another highlight of my weekend.

This is one of the families in the stands that we gave out hotdogs to.  When this boy politely asked if we had anymore hotdog hats, Kim couldn't resist giving him the one off her own head.  He must have been the happiest kid in the world!

Dave was black flagged for contact with another car on the track.  Penalty was waived after the team rushed into the penalty box, beer bribe in hand, breaking into the "I Wish I Were an Oscar Mayer Wiener" song.

Colby was black flagged for two wheels off the track.  As he pulled into the penalty box, explaining to the judge that he had been hit off the track by another car (an MG he mistook as a Miata), he exclaimed, "I wonder where the Miata is!!??" which is exactly what we ended up having to write 100 times on the car Bart-Simpson-style as our penalty.

After pulling the bun and fender back off the tire where the car was hit, we were back out onto the track.  Craig closed up the race, finishing in 56th place out of 147 cars, completing 240 laps total!  And even more exciting, they picked up the $500-Organizer's Choice award, being deemed the team who "got what the spirit of LeMons is all about".

STILL HAVEN'T SEEN ENOUGH?
